13th convocation of East West University held

The 13th convocation of East West University was held on Monday morning on its  own campus at Aftabnagar, Dhaka.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid presided over the ceremony as the  representative of the president.

The convocation speaker was the eminent litterateur Selina Hossain.

At the convocation, 1341 students, including four gold medalists, have been awarded  certificates.  Students  were excited to get  the degrees on time at the end of their academic life.

The education minister said  private universities are undoubtedly playing a major role in imparting quality higher education.

However, the education minister warned that tough measures will be taken against  private universities failing to build their own campus within stipulated time and not fulfilling other required standards.

He suggests other private universities that they follow the example set by East West University in this regard.

The education minister placed  great emphasis  on patriotism, human values,  moral education as well as  modern education to make the country a developed one by the year 2014.

Highlighting different aspects of  education and culture, convocation speaker Selina Hossain said taking advantage of the illiteracy of the people in this region, foreign  culture has distorted the local culture  here. She urges the students to aspire to be a complete human being  by cultivating human values along with achieving academic degrees.

Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, the president of the Board of Trustees of the university and former governor of Bangladesh Bank,  informed  that  grants of Tk 40 crore have been given over the last  17 years.

He advised the graduating students to come forward for the upliftment of  the unprivileged people  of  our society and for the welfare of the country.

University Vice-chancellor Professor Ahmed Shafee highlighted  the role of  East West University in reducing inequality in education  by providing grants.  Citing practices of foreign universities, he also urged  the government  to provide scholarships  to the genuinely talented  students of  private universities  too.

Members of the Board of Trustees of the University, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr M Sekander Hayat Khan, Deans of different faculties, the chairpersons of  different departments,  the registrar of  the university, graduating  students and their parents participated in the convocation ceremony.
