3 Shibir men killed in Noakhali clash

The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, clashed with law enforcers in Companiganj upazila of Noakhali this afternoon, leaving three Shibir men killed and 15 injured.

Five policemen were among the injured, reports our Noakhali correspondent.

The clash erupted around 4:00pm when police intercepted a procession brought out by the Jamaat-Shibir men from the local model high school in support of their Sunday’s hartal.

The activists set fire to the offices of land, family planning and public health engineering in the upazila at this point prompting the police to fire.

Three Shibir activists were killed at this point. Two of them were identified as Motiur Rahman Sajib, 22, Saiful Islam, 21, while one remains unnamed, said Sajidul Islam, acting officer-in-charge of Companiganj Police Station.

At least five policemen including Shafiqul Islam, the OC of the police station, were injured when the demonstrators threw cocktails and bricks, said Anisur Rahman, superintendent of police.

The local fire service rushed to the spot to bring the flame under control.

Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent any further incident.
