-Professor Dr. Md. Ekramul Hamid, Chairman, Dept of CSE

RU

The University of Rajshahi was established in 1953 and started academic programme in 1954 with 161 students in 7 departments. Passing over 60 years of struggle and glorious history, today it has grown into the status of one of the giant universities of the world with its 26000 students in 47 departments under 9 faculties and 5 institutes of advanced research, having an ever green campus of 303.80 hectors of land.

Today, there are 1225 teachers to teach the students, 605 officers, 570 supporting staff and 1400 general staff to cater to the needs and services of the university. There are huge physical infrastructures for labs, libraries, administration, recreation, residential purpose for teachers and others, along side 12 academic buildings and 17 residential hostels and dormitories for male and female students.

The beautiful campus of the university is located in Matihar of Rajshahi city, a city that stands on the bank of the mighty River Padma, in the north-western part of Bangladesh. This city is popularly known to all as the green city of education. To keep this glory of Rajshahi city upheld, there is a role of Rajshahi University. After the establishment of this university, Medical College, Engineering College, Law College, Women’s College, Polyte-chnique Institute and huge academic institutions were gradually established in the city. And, thus Rajshahi in real sense turns into a city education in Bangladesh.

RU-1

Of course, the University of Rajshahi has glorified its establishment in different ways of its contributions to the nation-building activities in Bangladesh. The spontaneous sacrifice of invaluable life of its teacher Dr. Shamsuddoha on 18 February 1969 sparked the mass-uprising of 1969 as fuel to the flame among the people across the country, which made the movement speedy towards the culmination in the great independence of Bangladesh. Except Dr. Doha, there are other teachers, students and employees of the university who sacrificed their valuable lives for the sake of our freedom and a good number of teachers, students and employees of the university also took part in the liberation war.

The University of Rajshahi has made remarkable contributions to the enhancement of the country’s store of knowledge and science, education and culture, literature and heritage. The products of this historic university have now spread at home and abroad and many of them have occupied dignified positions in their respective fields at national and international organizations. Among various brands of Rajshahi University products, there are many distinguished politicians, public servants, diplomats, educationists, scientists, physicians, engineers, computer experts, technologists, writers, poets, artistes and business magnets.

Due to its educational and different other contributions to the nation, the University of Rajshahi has occupied the place of the second largest and leading university in Bangladesh.  But, today it is not merely the second largest and leading university in Bangladesh; rather it stands as one of the largest and leading universities of the world. It has already earned international reputation for quality education and research and accordingly established research linkages with many renowned universities of different countries of the world, like the universities in USA, UK, Sweden, Australia, China, Japan, Vietnam, Italy and India.

Department of CSE

RU-2

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), one of the five departments under the Faculty of Engineering of Rajshahi University, was founded in 1993. In the Faculty of Engineering, undergraduate students enroll for a four-year programme through a highly competitive written admission test. On an average, 100 students compete for one seat of the faculty. Research in the university is conducted in specialized institutes as well as individual departments, including the Department of CSE with offering of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctoral (PhD) Programmes.

Today, the Department of CSE has attracted the attention of home and abroad. The world renowned Academicians, Researchers and IT-Professionals from home and abroad frequently visit CSE and make the students update with recent advancements in IT-technology. It is a great opportunity for CSE students to get in touch of these inspiring faces of home and abroad.

The reasons that cause to attract the luminaries of the computer world to the CSE Department is that this department has opened new horizons for higher studies and research, by bringing change into its overall course curriculum, lab, library and research facilities, keeping pace with the standard of the world-class universities.

As a result, the Department of CSE of the University of Rajshahi has become one of the leading Graduate and Post-Graduate Departments in Bangladesh. The present curriculum offered by this department has been designed in accordance with different renowned universities around the world. Recently with financial aid from World Bank and UGC worth 33 Million BDT, CSE Department has been renovated to meet the highest standard of education and consequently, it is now offering a world-class learning experience. All of the class rooms and laboratories are equipped with modern audio-visual teaching-learning facilities and necessary experimental kits for undergraduate and graduate students.

At the same time, it has extended the facilities to enhance research activities in different branches of computer science and its engineering applications. Moreover, the department frequently arranges workshop, seminar, academic contest of students and extra-curricular activities to explore the merits of its students in different dimensions.
