Eden College students stage demo in capital

Witnesses claim the students have been staging demonstrations since last month to turn the college into a full flagged university

Several hundred students, teachers and employees of Eden Women College University have been staging demonstrations in the capital’s College Gate area since morning, demanding the educational institution be regarded as a full flagged university.

The students of the country’s biggest educational institution for women also put blockades on the road that suspended vehicular movement and caused a severe traffic jam in the area.

Witnesses said several hundred students accompanied by teachers and employees first launched the demonstrations on the road in front of the college’s gate-2.

The witnesses said they have been demonstrating since last month to press home their demands.

As part of their previously announced programme, they took to the street around 11am and chanted slogans demanding the college be turned into a full flagged university immediately.

The demonstrators claimed that despite repeated assurance of announcing the college as a university, the concerned authorities did not implement their promises.

Besides, the students also announced a strike programme for February 24 and submission of memorandum to the Prime Minister on March 2.
