The Department of Ophthal-mology Kurmitola General Hospital is committed to serving the eye health needs of the people of Bangladesh through excellence in patient care, research and education.

Number of patients attending OPD has increased enormously. Total attending patient in OPD are 17,878 in last year. Of them male are 8,715 (48.75%) and female are 9,163 (51.25%).

We are committed to advancing the understanding and treatment of ocular disorders. Our ophthalmologists in turn use the available modalities to provide patients with the best possible outcomes.

Department History:

The ophthalmology department of Kurmitola General Hospital started as outpatient department on 18th September, 2012. Now the department activities include works in the inpatient department, outpatient department, investigation facilities and operative procedures.

Where we are

The Department of Ophthalmology located in the 2nd floor on the campus of Kurmitola General Hospital, Dhaka.

Man power

The department has 4 junior consultants, 2 medical officers and one senior stuff nurse. They are Four Doctors now are working in the department; Dr. S. M. Abul Hasan, Dr. Md. Ruhul Amin Khan, Dr. Abu Naim Mohammad Buzlur Rashid and Dr. Md. Emranul Islam

Activities of ophthalmology department

Our mission is to eliminate suffering from eye disease, both in our region and the wider Bangladesh. We want to do this by providing the highest quality medical and surgical eye care for patients, seeking new knowledge and treatments for eye diseases through research activities.

Following services are given in this department

w         Screening of patients for indoor admission

w         Treatment of various ocular diseases

w         Minor operations and other interventions e.g.

r           Refraction

r           SPT

r           Treatment and consultancy of referral patients from different departments

w         Previously major operation cannot be done due to lack of available facilities but it is immense pleasure to inform all and attending patients

w         That major operation will be started very soon because available surgical equipments now in our hands.

w         Operative services include incision and curettage of chalazion, intralesional injection, foreign body removal etc.

w         Investigation facilities include ophthalmoscopy, retinoscopy ,refaction, tonometry, fundus photography etc.

w         Goldmann Applanation Tonometer

w         Operative microscope

w         Surgical instruments for cataract surgery, glaucoma, squint, pterygium, base ball implants, DCR surgery etc.

Present capabilities

In fact due to lack of instrument and other facilities, we only perform treatment of outpatient department, refraction and minor operative procedure which are possible by these limited resources.

Future plan

In future, we are expecting to organize the department in newer latest investigation and treatment facilities like color fundus photograph, FFA (Fundus Fluroscence Angiogram), small incision cataract surgery, phaco surgery, laser therapy and so on.

The department continues to build on its core missions. There is ongoing growth of both clinical and research faculty and commensurate expansion of space and associate resources to fund this growth. The department communicates to work with the National Eye Program and private philanthropy to provide support for its exciting and innovative programs.

I am pleased to share with you that our department will soon be combined with a separate OT complex in this building which will allow expansion of services and capacity and will improve the clinic experience for patients and physicians alike.

Conclusion

We do believe that with the help of Govt. and local authorities, we will be able to fulfill the expectation of our people, govt. and authorities by materialized National Eye Care Plan and vision 2020. We also try to strengthen our academic and clinical activities through CME Program and program for training manpower.
