On the upcoming mayoral election of Chittagong city, Awami League candidate AJM Nasir Uddin called a press conference on the 23rd of March. In the conference, the presence of AL leaders of Chittagong metro city was eye-catching. Many commented that it was hard to believe that long-divided AL leaders have come into one row aiming the upcoming mayoral election.
Regarding this, on Monday Chittagong north and south districts of AL jointly organized this press conference at the IEB. This conference was seemed like a big get-together. All came into one row forgetting the past grievances over trifling matters. Even one day ago it was a quite different matter. Whether it is a matter of show or satisfying the AL President it becomes a question to many. The reason is that in the mayoral election 2010 all did so. But the reality was that ABM Muhiuddin Chowdhury lost to his political disciple BNP candidate M Manjur Alam with huge difference.
It is true that when ABM Muhiuddin Chowdhury was made president and AJM Nasir Uddin was made General Secretary with 71-member committee of Chittagong metro city, no meeting was held with such one row of ALleaders and workers. Even in the extended meeting of AL or in the protest of BNP-led 20-party’s blockade or hartal, no such a united programme of AL was seen. So, this causes the impact of this united conference with a different look.
Presided over by ABM Muhiuddin Chowdhury, AL presidium member Ishaq Mia, city AL vice-president Afsarul Amin MP, Vice-president Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, Sunil Sarker, Ibrahim Hossain Babul, Khorshed Alam Sujan, Altaf Hossain Bachchu,CDA chairman and city AL finance secretary Abdus Salam, city AL member M A Latif MP, Didarul Alam MP, CU Pro-VC Prof. Dr. Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury, north district president Nurul Alam Chowdhury, GS M A Salam, south district president Muslem Uddin Ahmed, GS Mafizur Rahman and exxecutive members of both north and south districts. It is said that due to illness, city AL vice-president Nurul Islam BSc was not present.
Muhiuddin Chowdhury told the journalists that he along with many was the candidate for mayoral election. But they abided by the decision of the AL president and forgetting the difference he has supported Nasir. He said those did not get the nomination they might have frustration. Overcoming this, they would work to snatch the victory and they have no alternative to victory.
On 15th March in a restaurant of Momen Road, a portion of 14-party took decision to support Muhiuddin as AL candidate for mayoral election. It also gave birth to issues of discussion and criticism. Accordingly his return to Chittagong from Omra, he was given a reception at the airport and a big show-down was made in the city.
On the other hand, CDA chairman Abdus Salam started huge campaign for mayoral election before the declaration of schedule and made him all-set for mayoral candidate. For this, he organized at least a hundred of yard meetings across the city. But, overlooking this, Prime Ministrt Sheikh Hasina after a discussion with 10 top AL leaders of Chittagong finally nominated Nasir on 20th at the Gonobhaban.
It is to be mentioned that on 18th March at noon, the EC declared schedule of three city corporations. On 28th April, elections of Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation and Chittagong City Corporation will be held.
