Psychology Department is considered to be one of the most prestigious and model departments of Rajshahi College. The department was established in 1969. It started functioning with Higher Secondary Courses in the Fuller Hostel Building in 1970. The department was shifted to the 1st floor of Arts Building in 1975. The founder Head of the Department was Mr. Md. Nurunnabi. When the department started functioning,  the number of teaching staff was only three. Mr. Azizul Haq was one of them. In the early days of this department the number of students in each Honours session was 25 and now it is 135. At present almost one thousand students study in this department. It offers a three years Degree (Pass) course, four years B.Sc (Honours) and one year M.Sc course for the students under National University. There are four class rooms, a computer room, a faculty room and a room for the Head of the department.

Before the inception of National University, Honours course was conducted by Rajshahi University with the sincere effort and hard work of the college authority. In 1993 Masters Course in Psychology of Rajshahi College came under the authority of National University.

With respect we remember those distinguished teachers who contributed much to the success of the department since its inception  They are Prof. M A Moeed, Prof. A B M Akhter Hossain, Prof. A S M Khondaker Monirul Islam, Mrs. Mahmuda Khanam, Prof. Jamini Shankar Seal, Prof. Akkas Ali khan, Prof. Mrs. Rokeya Begum, Mrs. Sufia Zulfikar Nazma, Mr. Md. Enamul Haque, Prof. Begum Rahima Ali, Prof. Feroza Khondker, Dr. Quazi Afifa Sultana, Prof. Nasim Banu, Prof. A K M Shamsuddin and many others.

The department has an excellent academic atmosphere. It has one post for professor, three posts for associate professor, four posts for assistant professor and four posts for lecturer. All teachers are qualified and dedicated to support and guide the students in all possible ways. The teachers have formed several committees which monitor, evaluate and try to upgrade the academic performance of the students. In each class an experienced teacher is assigned as a course co-ordinator. Course co-ordinator supervises the academic and extra curriculuar activities of the class. He closely monitors students, shares their problems and takes necessary steps.

There is a seminar-library named “Khondaker Monirul Islam Smirity Pathagar” which has around four thousand books. The department has a plan to renovate the seminar room and add more books to the library for the benefit of the students. The students of this department use the seminar-library for reading and borrowing books. There is a Seminar Assistant cum Computer Operator and a peon in the department. The department has a rich laboratory which is exceptionally equipped with modern apparatus. A skilled Lab-Assistant is working there. The department has several computers, Laptop, Multi Media Projector to conduct the classes and most of the activities related to admission and examination are done  online.

Apart from imparting lessons, the teachers teach moral values so that they become good citizens of the country. They can distinguish between right and wrong. It obviously helps them to enlighten the people of their surroundings. Besides academic work the students take part in literary and cultural activities of the college every year and bring glory to the department by winning prizes in various cultural activities like debate, essay competition, singing and so on.

We have a series of success history in co-curricular activities. In Last two years our students won champion trophy in inter department debate competition. Students also take part in gardening, annual sports, football and cricket tournament and fresher reception. Every year the department publishes departmental Magazine and Wall Magazine. As a course work students conduct field studies and research in various aspects.

The students are also the members of BNCC, Rover Scout, and Badhon which provide voluntary services to the college and enable them to be involved in social services. Study tours, picnics and excursion are arranged under the guidance and supervision of the Head of the Department and teachers. The students can visit important places which are attractive to the historians, and tourists in terms of culture and heritage. They enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of nature by observing natural objects during their study tours. With these activities the department tries to improve  students’ experience both inside and outside the classroom.

The teachers of the department try to encourage the students to start working towards their individual goals in their own way from their first day at college. The aim of the teachers is to maximize the potential of the bright and promising students whatever be their social and cultural background. For effective plans and policies results of students are getting better day by day. A good number of students are getting first class and GPA 4 every year. After the completion of Honours and Masters Courses in Psychology students have good job opportunities. They can serve in both public and private organizations. They become qualified for the BCS examination. Psychology professionals with a masters degree are likely to face competition for jobs because of the limited number of positions that require only a masters degree.  Those candidates who possess a masters degree will find jobs as psychological assistants or counselors, providing mental health services under the direct supervision of a licensed psychologist. Still, other psychologists may find career opportunities involving research and data collection and analysis in government offices, universities, or private colleges and companies. Job opportunities directly related to psychology are not much for bachelor’s degree holders as many job candidates possess both a bachelor’s degree and post graduate degree. Bachelor degree holders are likely to find jobs as assistants in rehabilitation centers or in other positions involving research, data collection and analysis. Psychology professionals with a bachelor’s degree may become high school teacher, medical promotion officer, banker and insurance worker.

Already the students of this department have established themselves in many professional sectors. They are contributing to spread the knowledge of psychology all over Bangladesh. Most interestingly at present two former students are working as teachers in this department.

The enthusiastic and inspiring teachers of Psychology Depart-ment try to motivate the students to become hard working and attentive to their studies. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders. This department has a glorious past. Hopefully this tradition will continue  through the devotion, effort, sincerity and punctuality of both teachers and students. The Department of Psychology of Rajshahi College has achieved a remarkable place regarding academic excellence. Rajshahi College is a famous institution and the collective effort of teachers, students and other staff will make it more effective and successful in achieving its objectives which mainly aim at making its students competent and good citizens of Bangladesh.
