Sandwipees urge government to solve burning problems of Sandwip

Sandwip is an eminent historic island in Bangladesh. Isolated from the mainland, this historic island has been suffering lots of burning problems. Realizing this, Hedayetul Islam Minto, a freedom fighter and a person of most renowned family of Sandwip, currently living in Dhaka, organized an opinion exchange meeting at National Press Club, in the capital city Dhaka on 24 August 2013, to draw the attention of the government to solve the burning problems of Sandwip.

The meeting was presided over by Hadayetul Islam Minto and attended by Dr. Jamaluddin, contestant of MP from Sandwip in 2008; Professor Hannana Begum, Director of Bangladesh Bank; Wali Ul Islam, Freedom Fighter and Joint Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh; Dr. AKM Rafiq Ahmed, Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Forest & Environment Affairs; Md. Forquan Uddin, Vice-Chairman of Sandwip Upazila Parishad; ABM Wahidur Rahman, President of Sandwip Development Forum and Sandwip Uttara Somaj; Lt. Col. Mohammad Didarul Alam, Bir Protik (Retd); Engr Tamzidur Rahman, Chairman, Corona Fashions Ltd; MG Faruk, Chairman, MG Group; Samsul Kibria, Banker, Samsul Kabir, GM Sugar & Food Industry Corporation, Mohammad Alamgir, President of Sandwip Somity, among others, were present. Monirul Huda Papon conducted the meeting.

The speakers focused on the various problems and crises of Sandwip. Among many issues of challenges, they discussed Gupto Chhora to Komira ghat steamer services, road and transport facilities, power crisis, construction of embankment, river erosion, land reclamation and others. They all urged the government to give immediate proper attention to the due development and Sandwip and to solve the burning problems of Sandwip as quickly as possible.
